Oh Yeah, it’s Pi Day. I Almost Forgot.

Oh yeah, I almost forget. Today is Pi Day. March 14. 3.14. In case you don’t know pi is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of any Euclidean circle’s circumference to its diameter. Whatever that means. I’m really not that great at math, so it’s all Greek to me. Hey, Euclid was Greek.

Anyway, I have one of those ‘ if I have to add more than 2 digits at a time in my head it short circuits and blows up’  brains.

Pi, however, is really more in the realm of geometry. At least I think it is.  And Geometry, even though it’s kind of lumped into the math category is really more about logic. I guess. In high school, Geometry was really the only math course that I did well in. So, I guess I’m kind of logical. Although sometimes I wonder.

I only know the first 8 digits of pi. The only reason that I know them is because I just remember “May I have a large container of coffee.”  The number of letters in each word represents the digits in pi. May=3; I=1; have=4; a=1, etc. So the first 8 digits of pi are 3.1415926.

I do have more complicated mnemonic techniques that I use to remember stuff, but I don’t think I’ll go into it. You’d be like, “OMG, SHUT UP”! It involves converting numbers into letters and the letters into words. I learned it from Harry Lorayne’s Memory Book.

Do you know who Melpomene and Thalia are? Well, they’re the 2 of the 9 muses that represent comedy and tragedy. Melpomene is tragedy. I remember that because the 2nd, 3rd and 4th letters of Melpomene are ELP. As in Help. As in Tragedy. Thalia is comedy. I just remember the 2nd and 3rd letters in Thalia. HA. As in funny. As in Comedy.

Want to remember the 16th – 19th Amendments to the Constitution. That Easy. Just remember “In come Senators with alcohol and women”. That’s easy to remember because that’s pretty much what Senators do. Drink and carouse with women.

16. Allows the federal government to collect income tax
17. Establishes the direct election of United States Senators by popular vote
18. Establishes Prohibition of alcohol (Repealed by Twenty-first Amendment)
19. Establishes women’s suffrage

You can also remember the first 3 digits of pi like this: 3.14 looks like a mirror image of the word PIE. I know. Whatever.
